Creativity and boredom

So, after watching a video that, after studies and researches, show a direct linke between boredom and creativity it got me thinking how could we apply this to architecture.

There is a lot of thinks one can say about this but if being bored is what makes creativity you can just sit in you room doing nothing. And then I thought, where does inspiration come into play?

This is an unanswered question because every person gets inspiration in different places but it does. But, after searching google ways to find inspiration I found that most of the ways it is recomended to find inspiration are very boring ways to do so, eg. meditationg, visit a local bookstore.

So mayeb it all goes together and to create great new buildings we need to be bored for a long time, or mayeb the inspiration part is all wrong and you need to find what inspires you to create a great new building.

There is also a quote from a random person in the comments that stuck to me about this video “To stave off boredom, I watched a video on why I shouldn’t stave off boredom”, wich also got me thinking about the architecture career

When do we have time to get bored during the architecture career to be creative?

Another comment also got me questioning even more things:

“contrary to popular belief, it’s not when you have absolutely nothing to do. It’s just when none of the options you have available to you appeal to you.”
I like this explanation, because every one of us has been told as a kid, when we complained about being bored like
do your homework, clean the toilets or any other unappealing task that doesn’t fix the boredom itself.

Another thing, is the reflections of this blog themselves. If there is any creative reflection from anyone in the class it most likely came from a time they were bored.

Another thing is that maybe when you are trying to be creative the more time you dedicate to it the more bored you become trying and the more creative you get over time wich is another think that I keep thinking about.

I extremely recommend this video and I think that everyone should watch it:

Isolation and madness

The last reflection got me thinking about how if a person is isolated from everyone long enough he becomes mad/crazy.

Human beings are very social “animals”, and seeing how someone hwo is isolated long enough turns crazy, wich has been proven by examples and it even has a movie called “cast away” wich also shows the example of this, where is the line between being bored and creative and being crazy?

Maybe madness is the peak of creativity

Or maybe a quote from before makes more sense now; “contrary to popular belief, it’s not when you have absolutely nothing to do. It’s just when none of the options you have available to you appeal to you.”
This quote is from: https://www.studygate.com/blog/scientific-benefits-boredom/

But even then maybe the mundane action from beins stranded in an island is doing the same thing every day to survive, and if that paired with the isolation of no social activity turns you crazy, maybe it makes you crazy creative aswell.

Are any of our views truly our own or do we simply inherit them from the environments and societies we live our lives in?(related to architecture)

This question will remain unanswered for many years to come but it makes you think how everything in you entire life has had an influence over you, even if it was extremely tiny, it does have an impact, everything you see has an impact, every building you enter has an impact, even in movies that transport you to different places have an impact. Many if the things mentioned before have something to do with architecture, the building we see or enter or even visit through movies have an impact in our life ever so small that can make a big difference in the long run of how we live our lives. The job of an architect, being either good or bad, has an influence in all the lives of the people that see their buildings or visit them, even if their are not concious of it. That’s why having good architects is important, so the inluence in peoples lives can be the best influence possible, obviously it doesn’t make a big difference in most of the lives, but in the ones it does it should make the architect proud and happy that his work has made a positive difference in this tiny big world.
