PA5-INTERPRETING ARCHITECTURE

GROPIUS HOUSE

As the name states, it’s the house of the architect i talked about in PA2, its the house he used to stay during his stay in the United States as it is located in Lincoln, Massachusetts and was built in 1937-1938.

It is located in a neighborhood that has very individual and wealthy houses so it doesn’t have any contrast apart from it’s environment but, even so, the environmental contrast is actually unified with the house.

The space of the house I would say it’s modern, but it looks very basic divided in rooms each for a different function.

The form is a single unified rectangle that has all the rooms inside with the entrance canopy thet breaks this unity. There is also terrace on the first floor in the shape of a rectangle outside the original one. The layout is rectangular geometry with irregular diagonal brakes.

It is a white building built with a lot of windows and other glass structures that let the light pass in wich wasn’t very usual at the time.

This building serves very well it’s function of a house, even having a big guest room and yard.

The main materials are concrete and glass. It is very simple geometry.

This work was very new at the time to the point the neighbours even called the house a “chicken coop”. This architect ended up being one of the most influetial modern architects of the time
