We tried to find architecture in the previous unit by collecting information from various sources. We succeeded. This time, we will attempt to determine, using a similar method to the first, the best definition of the profession as an architect.
Let’s begin by trying to define what it means to be an architect. Here are some of the ideas I have that I can come up with.
- One who makes a difference in the lives of others.
- A cultured individual, trained and available to meet the needs of society.
- One capable of bringing to life the ideas of individuals and families.
- Visionary, who strives to improve people’s quality of life.
- A professional who specializes in the design, projection, and development of a building.
- An innovative artist in the service of all.
- A worker who can control time and space.
- A communicator who is used to working in teams.
My experience in this field has been almost three months. However, it has given me the opportunity to understand one of the most important goals for anyone starting out. It’s “Learning to See” and although it may seem simple at first, I can assure you that it isn’t.
You can work slowly on this aspect of your career by reading the following points and exercises.
- Use the tools we have to look at it in order to make it into thought.
- Learn to analyze the world around you.
- Drawing is a way to interpret reality.
- Travel allows you to see the world from a new perspective and helps you understand other cultures, people, and experiences.
- Reading lets us travel to places we cannot.
- Creating unique looks from the endless possibilities of photography.
- Watching films that combine light, space, and movement such as architecture.
The second goal for anyone who is just starting in the architectural field should be “learning how to think”. What should we do once we’ve learned to see? It is possible to develop it and analyze it. Consider the idea and search for its meaning and form.
It is important to understand it. Some recommended aids can be used to help you understand it.
- Learn how to express ourselves and the tools that will help you do so.
- Be skeptical, distrusting, and curious.
- Encourage collective thinking by sharing your ideas with others and opening up dialogue.
Learning is essential. Once we have the idea, we need to make it real. The most beautiful part of the entire process is to me. Make the idea visible to everyone. Magnificent!
- Understanding user needs.
- Learn the structure rules of architecture from antiquity through the present.
- Learn about the materials, the compatibilities and the technical characteristics.
- Learn about traditional and modern building techniques, and how they are used to create the architecture around you.
- We need technical solutions. Constructive feasibility.
Let’s say we have been studying architecture for five to six years in Valencia. To be able practice as professionals, we have completed an enabling master’s. Now, we are at nine in morning in 2027 and ready to start our new lives.
Despite what many people may believe, there are many options for us to choose from. You can work freelance, for companies, or for the administration. We can dedicate ourselves to teaching, evaluation, and urban planning.
